Aug 12, 2021 Fitness clothing photography - How to launch an activewear brand in one photoshoot
Fitness clothing photography is all about understanding the brand positioning and the target audience. Find out how our Director of Photography worked with the client to create images that were on brief, on time and on budget.
United Giant Sports has been 3 years in the making, and the photos where the very last piece of the carefully orchestrated puzzle. The launch all came down to these- and this was, in Chris’ words, the first time he felt like he’d seen the brand come to life.
There's magic in a photograph for both customer and business owner, the pictures bring everything to life, and when you’ve been working on something for that long which few people have seen, suddenly you see them fulfilling their purpose on people and working as you hoped they would. The excitement of bringing your brand to life.
Chris’ goal with showing @unitedgiantsports was to create activewear that you could feel comfortable to wear all day-busy modern life demands a product that lives up to an all-round active lifestyle. He wanted his products to fit the purpose of looking good for daytime use, but also robust enough for workouts too.
How do we run the shoot?
Chris came to the Milton Keynes studio bright and early, and myself as the photographer greeted him. We had already set up our lighting and equipment ready to start shooting, which was using Profoto strobe lights, and using a white infinity cove as our backdrop for a seamless clean look to allow the clothing to stand out. Our trusty Sony A7 was set up on a rig tethered up to a iMac.
We grabbed a coffee and sat down to chat through the shots. We’d already agreed how many shots we were going to take, something we do for all our clients to make shoots run smoothly, so to make sure all of Chris’ products had even coverage, we went through each item type and the different style of shots for each.
We came to the conclusion thats the fitness clothing photos should be full-length, to allow Chris the flexibility to crop the images dependant on the photos’ purpose.
Getting the models in
Both our models Alexia and Fungshow very literally fit the clothes like they’d always owned them! We started by letting the models do their thing and showing us different poses, firing off lots of shots and then reviewing what looked best.
We went on to shoot a variety of leggings, tank tops and a hooded jacket in multiple colours and styles, and once we got the poses chosen for each product, we sailed through the images.
The great thing for Chris was that when we take a picture, it instantly comes up on a computer screen for him to see the results.
Once we had our first bunch of shots, Chris and I looked through them together, he chose the ones he thought worked best and I gave advice along the way, and we chose his final shots there and then.
Our ideas developed, and we even added in a few athletic movements and yoga poses, to demonstrate the products being used for fitness.
Working as a team with a client, whom ever or for whatever product it may be, is so important. You are the one who knows the brand best, and we are the ones who will bring that brand to life and into the world for you to share with your customers.
The clients use of the photos
Chris has a highly skilled background in sports, marketing and design, so it was very important that the images were versatile for him to personally use them across multiple areas of the business.
It’s especially important when launching a new business that your images really showcase your product, as it’s the first time anyone gets to see your creation for the very first time.
Efficiency is key!
We worked with Chris to give him the best chance to promote his products, so in our post production we delivered cut out images as well as full images with a background, to give him the flexibility to add them to graphics and adverts, which you will be able to see in practise on his website here.
Thanks to our efficiency, Chris had the images delivered to him 4 working days after the photoshoot. This meant that he was able to get his website and company launched only 6 days after our photoshoot- invaluable time gained.
No compromise on quality, and photos fit for multiple purposes.
We are already talking to Chris about the next fitness clothing photoshoot for his new line of products coming soon, and we can’t wait to see what heavenly athletic garments he comes to us with next!
