Photography services for sporting magazines

Having previously shot the UFC at Wemberly, O2 area and Manchester the Uniquecapture team were looking forward to shooting the Cage Warriors 68 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool

Shooting for Sweden’s biggest MMA magazine we were keen to try out our new Phase One IQ250 camera. Traditionally it would not be possible to shoot medium format for sports but the new Phase one sensor and DF+ body should technically make this possible. If it lived up to expectations then the Phase One system would enable us to capture 50MB files and allow our journalists to see the shots live on an iPad in real time as they were being taken.

Low light, fast action, and a metal cage in the way makes Shooting cage fighting extremely challenging. Without the best equipment and good technique is is not possible to get magazine quality shots. The first challenge is to get the cage to disappear. This requires fast glass, F2.8 aperture is the minimum requirement. Secondly we need to freeze the action. A minimum of 1/500’s or preferably quicker is required. Finally, as we can’t use strobes the camera needs to be able to handle ISO’s of 1600-3200 without introducing too much noise into the shots. Mix that with fast focusing and avoiding getting the lens splattered by blood and your in with a chance.

Log in next week to see how the Phase One IQ250 performed……
